Police presence in our communities introduces more violence under the guise of preventing it, and police officers who harm our communities are not held accountable for their actions. Meanwhile, police continue to use pretextual laws to surveill and target certain communities, and act as de facto immigration enforcers and fueling the deportation machine.
How We’ll Solve It
We must demand accountability and transparency in policing and protect our community members from police violence.
End Qualified Immunity (S.182 / A.710)
empowers communities to hold New York law enforcement accountable, and ensures that officers who commit harm and take lives are not insulated from accountability.
Stop Police Misconduct During Interrogations (S.2303/A.1156), (S.1099/A.1963)
New York’s police officers have a well-documented history of extracting false convictions, often by lying to the accused. These bills address police misconduct during interrogations, prohibit law enforcement from lying during interrogations, and require consultation with an attorney before young people are interrogated.
Geofence Warrant Ban (S.217/A.3306), Rogue DNA Database (S.998/A.1877)
ends the rogue DNA database, which includes DNA samples secretly collected from people without their knowledge, and halts biometric surveillance, with its well-documented misidentification of Black and other people of color by law enforcement agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
New York for All (S.987/A.5686)
protects immigrants from being funneled to ICE or Customs and Border Patrol by ensuring that no state or local resources are used to fuel deportations and separate families, and ends local law enforcement agreements to double as ICE agents.
