Every day, New Yorkers are arrested and imprisoned because they cannot afford to pay fines and fees, and abusive immigration bond companies take advantage of individuals in detention. New York must end this system of racialized taxation, which turns police and courts into debt collectors and imposes additional financial burdens on re-integrating New Yorkers.

The Problem
How We’ll Solve It
We must end fines and fees associated with criminal legal system contact and invest in and support the people who have been harmed by the criminal and immigration systems.
Unemployment Bridge Program
will provide unemployment compensation to workers who are excluded from regular unemployment insurance because of their immigration status or because of the kind of work they do, including those who have recently been released from incarceration.
Reform Gate Money
seeks to challenge New York State’s outdated prison release allowance by requiring a meaningful amount of financial support is provided to people upon reentry.
End Predatory Court Fees (S.313/A.4183)
eliminates court, parole and probation fees, as well as mandatory minimum fines, and would end the practice of arresting and incarcerating people solely for an inability to pay fines and fees.
Access to Representation Act (S.999/A.170)
enacts the first right to counsel for immigrants and help stabilize immigrants’ lives
